On August 3, 2017, the Czinka Panna Roma Cultural Association also wreathed at the Holocaust Memorial in Bük (which was financially supported by the Association in 2012). We thank Tiborné Németh and the Bük Roma Nationality Self-Government for their high-quality organizing work and the touching speeches of the performers.
According to the decision of the Gipsy World Congress of Paris in 1972, August 2 is the International Memorial Day of the Gypsy Holocaust, because on this day in 1944, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Gypsy Camp, where thousands of people were killed, was terminated.
After the welcome speech of Tiborné Németh, the president of the Roma Nationality Self-Government, Dr. Péter Balázsy County Notary spoke to the gathered people. „We remember and we will not forget those who have fallen victim to the cruelty of history. Neither those who have gone through the horror. We have to remember and remind the people so this could never happen again” – emphasized the Notary.
Then the mayor, Dr. Sándor Németh continued. He emphasized that there was much less remembrance for the Gypsies than the Jews, although the suffering and fate of the two ethnicities were similar. Remembrance of the Roma Holocaust has long been lost, so we know little about the process, about the people involved.
Norbert Hegedüs, President of the National Gypsy Generations Interest Protection Organization, and Sándor Márkus, leader of the Szombathely Jewish Community, spoke to those present. But not in the usual way, but about hate. He emphasized that it is not the Holocaust we should talk about at the commemorations, but about the need of eliminating hatred in the world, because it is a completely unnecessary human motive.
